Architectural Concept: Lilypad Floating City

Water City By now, most of us have heard about the Island Cities being built in Dubai , but Inhabitant has just done a feature on a new concept by artist Vincent Callebaut for a self-sufficient floating city that will never have to face a problem about finding land to build on.

Award-winning architect Vincent Callebaut has designed a self-sustainable Lilypad City as a long-term solution to the problem of rising sea levels caused by climate change. A Lilypad City would provide a home for 50,000 people and would float atop water. The artificial island includes a lake, mountains, shopping malls and drifts on the ocean currents.

The Lilypad would take advantage of all of today�s green technologies, including generating power from the sun, wind and water, and would produce zero emissions from its residents.. Don�t expect to see construction on one of these anytime soon, but don�t be surprised if, like the Island Cities in Dubai , real estate starts branching out into the oceans in the next decade.

Burj Khalifa formerly known as Burj Dubai, is a skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and the tallest man-made structure ever built, at 828 m (2,717 ft). Construction began on 21 September 2004, with the exterior of the structure completed on 1 October 2009. The building officially opened on 4 January 2010. The building is part of the 2 km2 (490-acre) flagship development called Downtown Burj Khalifa at the "First Interchange" along Sheikh Zayed Road, near Dubai's main business district.
The total cost for the Burj Khalifa project was about US$1.5 billion; and for the entire new "Downtown Dubai", US$20 billion. Mohamed Ali Alabbar, the Chairman of Emaar Properties, speaking at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat 8th World Congress, said in March 2009 that the price of office space at Burj Khalifa had reached US$4,000 per sq ft (over US$43,000 per m2) and that the Armani Residences, also in Burj Khalifa, were selling for US$3,500 per sq ft (over US$37,500 per m2). The completion of the tower coincided with a worldwide economic slump and overbuilding, causing it to be described as "the latest ... in [a] string of monuments to architectural vacancy.

Avatar, also known as James Cameron's Avatar, is an American 3-D science fiction epic film written and directed by James Cameron, and was released on December 16, 2009 by 20th Century Fox. Erta Ale is a continuously active basaltic shield volcano in the Afar Region of northeastern Ethiopia. It is the most active volcano in Ethiopia. Erta Ale is 613 metres (2,011 ft) high, with one or sometimes two active lava lakes, one of only five in the world, at the summit. These lava lakes occasionally overflow on the south side of Erta Ale. It is notable for being the longest existing lava lake, present since the early years of the twentieth century (1906). It is located in the Afar Depression, a badlandish desert area spanning the border with Eritrea, and the volcano itself is surrounded completely by an area below sea level, making it one of the lowest volcanoes in the world.

Erta Ale's last major eruption was on September 25, 2005, which killed 250 head of livestock and forced thousands of nearby residents to flee. Additional lava flow activity took place in August 2007, forcing the evacuation of hundreds and leaving two missing. Not much is known about Erta Ale, as the surrounding terrain is some of the worst on earth and the native Danakils are not friendly.

The Hajj (Arabic: حج‎ Ḥaǧǧ) is a pilgrimage to Mecca. When her mom, Judy, and her father divorced, her older brother Mike moved with their father to Laguna Beach, California, while she moved with their mother to Barrington, Illinois, a suburb northwest of Chicago. After having trouble adjusting to a new life with a stepfather and stepbrother, Cavallari moved to California to be with her dad and brother, and was enrolled at Santa Margarita Catholic High School her freshman year of high school. After she attended a Driver's Education course through Laguna Beach High School, her father enrolled her in LBHS.
